Is it because they make kids happy because they get to eat the junk? Or maybe parents get happy because they do not have to hear their kids whine anymore on a road trip that they are hungry. Or perhaps Happy Meals help mom feel good because she gets a night off from cooking. If all your meals are McDonalds Happy Meals, then you have got to make changes to your familys’ eating habits now! If you saw the Michael Moores’ movie Super Size Me, you will understand how awful fast food is for your body. The vision of the french fry that looked the same on the day it was fried to months after in the car is proof that there is something in that french fry that just is not good. You too can have happy meals right in your own home! The happy meal that I am referring to are meals that are homemade, where everyone is sitting at the table together and sharing the days activities. Here are tips to having “happy meals”.
1. Have at least one happy meal together a day. Routine will help your family adjust to the new meal time activity.
2. Get your family into planning for the meals by helping decide what will be served and even shopping for the ingredients.
3. Turn off the television. Eating in front of the television distracts everyone from just being together and some studies have suggested that it is a cause of obesity.
4. Make a pact to not eat fast food for a week. See what happens. You might find that after a while, you do not crave it. Not only that but your family might enjoy the meals you prepare better than the fast food alternatives.
5. Make meal time fun by getting creative. Try taco night or make your own sushi. How about breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast? You can try eating outside or on the floor or even in a tent.
6. Try making your own version of a McDonald’s Happy Meal but healthy style.
7. Think of ways to spice up the conversation at the table. You can pass around an object and only the person with the object is allowed to speak. Or maybe you can just try to speak only pig latin at the table.

My son is crazy about Happy Meals too, until I let him watch Food Inc. It really helps if kids are also taught to choose healthier meals or given healthier alternatives.
