Lots of Christian friends of mine have given up something for Lent – a Christian tradition spanning the weeks between Ash Wednesday and Easter which includes among other things, self-denial.

On March 21st, I asked my Facebook friends what they are trying to give up, understanding that some are practicing this self-denial for Lent, and others giving up anything leavened for Passover, a holiday traditionally celebrated by Jews commemorating the exodus out of Egypt and transformation of the people from slavery to freedom.

Of the 21 or so responses, many listed sugar, high fructose corn syrup, chicken, wheat, corn, diet Coke, white carbohydrates, gluten, cheese, and more.

Why are all the responses I got food related? Maybe it is because I usually write about food that inspire those of my “friends” to write something food-propriate. Or is it that food is something that we commonly quarantine ourselves from?

What about computer usage, dvr recordings, texting or other time-sucks?

Honestly, I am in the deny food category. It is so much easier for me to deny myself a certain type of food than to give up modern conveniences or being tapped in at all times.

During this time of self-denial for many religions, considering giving up things that really make a difference in life. Don’t ask me to give up food!!!
